Soccer field on Hauptmarkt?

Look what I have found in Google Maps!
This is the satelite view of Nürnberg City Market (Hauptmarkt):

And here’s a mundane aerial view of the same place taken from nuernberg.de:

I suppose it must have been some event during 2006 World Cup that Google has snapped…

Fellow left-handers, go and sue!

Filed under: — Mikolaj at analog clock showing 12:28

This article in Stern has got me raging!

Scientists at the Schleswig-Holstein University Clinic used MRI tomography to scan the brains of left-handers, right-handers, and left-handers turned right-handers. Yesterday they announced the results of their studies. The lateralization of the brain stays the same for life, it seem. Actually the areas of the right brain hemisphere responsible for controlling the movements, were more active in left-handed people retrained to write with the right hand than in their un-retrained counterparts. So in a sense retraining left-handers makes them even more left-handed!

I remember a host of homebrew or should I say school-brew methods of changing my lateralization - being forced to draw all sorts of doodles with the right hand, being promised better grades for essays rewritten with right hand, and getting a worse one for them being indecipherable, tracing someone else’s notes with right hand, etc. To no avail. Still, I’m happy that Victorian punishment was démodé back then.

Too bad my late primary school teachers can’t be made liable for all the ordeals.

Fahrenheit 451

Have seen this story linked on mobileread.com:

This guy in Wilkes-Barre Pa. has ca. 3000 books and thus “poses a fire hazard”. So the authorities were forced to close his home.

Yeah sure, fireman Guy Montag can confirm that books do pose certain hazard…

But why only books? CDs, DVDs, VHSes, Betamaxes, are all plastic, so they’re probably a hazard too. Digitize them all, and send the originals to a museum!

Damn, I am fine reading off the PRS-500, I don’t miss the smell/touch/feel of a real book. Call me a fetishist, but I just can’t imagine enjoying music without that je ne sais quoi of “physical” CDs, inlays, booklets and digipaks!

What do you do if you want to make say, a deer ragoût? Go shopping for deer meat. Simple.
Well it seems that some guys go and buy a Zoo ticket instead:

The Zoo keepers in Erfurt are accused of killing animals and selling their meat.

So far I have just seen mentions of goats, sheep and deer in the media, no bizarre species… Let’s see how the investigation unfolds.

Quote of the day

Filed under: — Mikolaj at analog clock showing 11:54

Well, that was obvious from the beginning, wasn’t it?

Oscar Pistorius was disqualified for steping outside of his lane.
It’s one of these situations when one knows upfront what will happen. The question is only “how”.
So now, we have the “how”. And no discimination whatsoever!

There’s a saying from the old stalinist times:

“Give me a man, and I’ll give you a case” (against him)

Of course, that’s very very unfair of me. Let me know when they find a catch that will bar Natalie du Toit from competing in Bejing.

Study claims weather worst during weekends

Filed under: — Mikolaj at analog clock showing 9:55

Last year, I had a mischievous plan to go to zoo with my daughter… On a second sunny Saturday (stupid as it may have been, the plan was to avoid a crowd of zoo-hungry fellow denizens, on the first sunny Saturday). It took almost 3 months, before we hit two sunny weekends in a row.

So I did have a gut feeling that something’s wrong with the weekend weather. But now it’s official - the German study proves that during weekends the weather is worse than on working days - temperatures are by 0.2°C higher on Wednesday than during the weekend, rainfall is the highest on Saturday, Sundays are the most cloudy. Kimchi lovers, beware of project managers

Must be something fishy about these BOKs. I’ve heard Bok Choy is next on their list…
